Always a protagonist, from the Roman era to the Risorgimento, the current layout of the Piazza was designed by Ascanio Vitozzi in 1584 for Carlo Emanuele I. Surrounded on three sides by elegant porticoes, it frames scenic palaces: the austere Royal Palace, the Regional Council Palace, the Government Palace, the Regio Theater, the Armory, and the Royal Library, the custodian of Leonardo da Vinci’s magnificent self-portrait, the Real Church of S. Lorenzo, a jewel by Guarino Guarini, and Palazzo Madama.
Two thousand years of history are enclosed within the walls of Palazzo Madama: built by the Romans as a city gate, it later became a fortress and finally a castle subjected over the centuries to different renovations due to the whims and desires of the many distinguished residents. Among them, Maria Giovanna Battista di Savoia, one of the two “Royal Madams” who contributed to the enrichment of the building in the Baroque style, and Maria Cristina di Borbone, responsible for significant interior works.
